Boing!

'If you want Santa to come - you
have to go to sleep!'

This week and last, our Reception children and many of their parents have been visiting the Unicorn Theatre to see the fabulous production - Boing! - which tells the story, through dance, of two boys who are so excited about Santa's visit that they can't get to sleep.

The children loved the magical performance and they also enjoyed the walk from the bus, past the Shard, HMS Belfast and City Hall. We even had time to climb up on top of Tower Bridge for some brilliant river views.

The fun continues this week with theatre workshops at Hill Mead for children and their parents. While, in class, we have been doing lots of Boing-related activities, including maths with teddies bouncing on beds!

Diggersaur Design

Drawing Inspiration
Our new Early Years class text - Diggersaurs by Michael Whaite - has inspired some brilliant creative work this week. The children are loving the story about the characters who are both dinosaurs and digging machines.

The children have been building diggers and dinosaurs from blocks, meccano, lego and junk modelling. They have been writing letters to the Diggersaurs and writing their own dinosaur names. Here we can see some of them busy at work, designing their own diggersaur characters with their own unique functions.

'Mine has spikes with wings so it can fly'
'Mine has a giant roller to flatten the ground.'
Children from Butterfly class.

Next week we will be carrying on with our Diggersaurs topic so watch this space for more monster machines.

Our Class Snails

We are all so interested in the outside world in the EYFS.
We have a glass tank in class, in which the children are putting snails they have found.
There is so much to talk about, especially when the snails decide to have a race!

Our Portrait Project

There is a lot of excitement about the special things that children have brought into the EYFS.
They have been talking about why these things are special, and are very interested in each other's.
We have taken a photo of each child with their special thing, and the children will be creating their own portraits soon.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar.. As told by Afia

"A little egg layed on the leaf and one sunny morning, out the egg popped a little tiny very hungry caterpillar and then he started looking for some food. (Afia goes and gets the book). On Monday he ate one apple. On Tuesday he ate through two pears. On Wednesday he ate through three plums. On Thursday he ate through four strawberries. On Friday he ate through 1,2,3,4,5 5 oranges. On Saturday he ate one lolly one cherry cake on sausage one cupcake and one big slice of cake. That might he had a stomach ache. On Sunday he ate through one leaf and felt much better. He wasn't a little caterpillar anymore. He is a big fat caterpillar. He made a cocoon and pushed himself in so he can sleep inside and he stayed in there for more that two weeks and then he on Monday again he turned into a beautiful butterfly. The end".

The Life Cycle of a Butterfly

"The caterpillar is long and here's a apple and here's a a orange and a strawberry, he's got to eat cos he's so hungry like the story we read" (I wonder what will happen when he has eaten all the food...) "He not a hungry caterpillar anymore and not a tiny caterpillar anymore cos he's eaten all the food". "Miss now I I do a cocoon, cos he can live and be warm and then he turn to a big beautiful butterfly, I can do a butterfly too you know. The hungry caterpillar has a baby I think so he comes in the egg.. I think so the egg fall down in the tree in the bushes. I make a tiny egg, little, little egg, crack out I think it going to be a baby caterpillar".

Minibeasts

This term we are learning about 'Minibeasts'. We have started our topic by reading the story 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' written by Eric Carle. In two weeks time we will be visiting the Butterfly House at the Natural History Museum, which will be a great chance to observe butterflies and learn more about them.

Terrific Technology

This week during our ICT time we learnt how to label farm animal pictures using software on Purple Mash. First we had to choose which animals we wanted to put onto our farm, then we dragged the sounds we could hear the animal's name onto the picture. Here are some examples of our work:

Crystal Palace Park and Farm

As part of our topic 'All Creatures Great and Small', we went to visit animals in a farm, we had so much fun. We have been learning about ordinal numbers, here is a recount of what happened on our trip:

"First we walked out of School and walked past Creams and got the bus"

"Second we got to play in the park where there was a curly whirly slide, and I played in the dinosaur eggs"

"Then we ate lunch, and I had tuna sandwich"

"We fed the ducks bread we never eat!"

"We walked past the dinosaurs swimming in the water"

"We saw the goat and he has horns and a beard and the pig didn't want to see us so the lady gots a banana and then he came to see us"

Chocolate Button Experiment

Today we listened to a poem called 'Chocolate', written by Michael Rosen. We each held a chocolate button in the palm of our hand, read below to find out what happened next...

Faisal talks about what happened whilst listening to the poem:
"We got chocolate in our hands and we had to squeeze it. The chocolate had all melted in our hands. It was all sticky. We got to lick our hands and eat the chocolate. It melted like a snowman. Our hands are warm."

Here are some of the other things we said whilst talking about what happened during the experiment:

Davinna: "It's messy chocolate, it's not chocolate any more, it's like chocolate milk".

Bruna: "It was dry but then it was all sticky"

Kha'Mari "It was hard and then it went soft"

Reception Bus Trip

Today we went on a Bus Trip around our local area, Brixton. We talked about all the places we visited, the things we could see, and some of us even managed to spot our houses! We had noticed that the windows on the bus were very dirty, luckily we went to the bus garage and we got to go through the bus wash. It was so exciting, we got to go through twice! Take a look at some of the pictures from our trip:

Naughty Bus

Our focus story this week is 'Naughty Bus' in preparation for our Bus Trip on Thursday (although we hope our bus won't be as naughty as the one in the story). We have been thinking of ways buses help us, and we have thought of some questions we would like to ask the bus driver on Thursday, here are a few of our questions:

"I wonder how the bus stops.." - Kamarni

"I wonder why the bus driver paints all the buses red.." - Tahiya

"How many seats does the bus have?" - Bruna

"Why does the bus have so many windows?" - Kha'Mari

People Who Help Us - When we are poorly

This week we have been learning about the different people who can help us when we are feeling poorly. We have learnt that in an emergency Paramedics can come in an ambulance to help you, and we used junk modelling to create our own ambulance models. We have also turned our home corner into a Doctors Surgery, we are role-playing being Doctors and Nurses and taking care of each other. In ICT this week we have been using 2Simple Software to learn more about Doctors and Nurses.
