Early Years Explorers

Yesterday we were lucky to have Louise from London CLC come to visit us. We explored how to record things using different types of technologies. First, we took pictures using digital cameras and put the pictures together to make a story. Then we used voice recorders to retell one of our favourite stories, 'Room on the Broom'.

Take a look at some of the work we have done:

Mason: "I liked to stroke him"

La'Shaye "I didn't like the chicken when it was following me, it was scary"

Kha'Mari: "How does a chicken stand up after it's been flying?"

Hill Mead Hens

This week it is our turn to take care of the Hill Mead Hens. We have created a Vet Surgery role-play area to help us think of ways we can care for living things. The chickens have also been coming to visit us every afternoon in the Reception outdoor area. It's been great to spend so much time with the chickens, we have been collecting their eggs and on Friday we will be using them to make egg sandwiches!

Reception Trip to Loughborough Park

Today we had so much fun visiting Loughborough Park. We worked together to collect sticks and used these to make broomsticks. Some of our broomsticks broke, just like in the story, so we had to find stronger sticks to make our broomsticks. We loved every minute of it and it was wonderful to see so many parent helpers working with us too.

Ziggity Zaggety Let's Get Writing!

Look at one of our magic spells! We are beginning to hear the initial sounds in words and are using our phonics knowledge to write them down. What would you make with your spell?

Abraa Cadabraaa!

Ooooooooooh this week we have been writing and making our own spells just like the animals do in the story 'Room on the Broom'. We decided to make our very own bubbling potion, first we had to count out 10 spoons of bicarbonate of soda, then we slowly poured vinegar into it and we instantly saw it start to bubble.. then it started to spill over the side of the pot!

Room on the Broom

This term our focus story is 'Room on the Broom' written by Julia Donaldson.

Here are some of our favourite parts of the story:

Bruna: "I like it when the witch drops the wand in the water and then the broom snaps in two! I don't like it when the scary dragon wants to eat the witch".

David: "My favourite is dragon".

Kha'Mari: "I like it when the animals trick the dragon so it don't eat witch and chips for tea".

Peter: "It's funny when the broom breaks and they all fall off!"

In Reception we have been learning sounds in phase 2. These sounds will help us learn to read and write. You can help to practice recognising these sounds at home.

This video shows how each sound is pronounced:

Other things you can try at home to help with your child's reading;
Begin to orally blend CVC words e.g. when you sound out c-a-t, they can tell you the word is cat, and also orally segment CVC words e.g. when you say “mum”, they can pick out the sounds m-u-m.
