Nursery Stories

This week in Nursery we have been telling our own stories. Have a read and tell us what you think:

Chick Chick Chick Chick Chicken!

In Nursery we have been reading Handa's Surprise. We have spent lots of time talking about the word 'surprise'. What does it mean to get a surprise? We had a surprise of our own this week when Miss Read opened a box and out popped a chicken! We enjoyed finding out what the chicken felt like to touch and how we can care for our Hill Mead Hens.

Budding Artists

Nursery are reading the story 'Handa's Hen'. This week we have tasted all of the delicious fruits from the story. We have also done observational drawings of the fruits which appear in the story, our work has made a lovely display in the Nursery!

Meetin' the Chicken

We have enjoyed reading Handa's Hen in the last few weeks, and we are lucky to have some of our very own chickens living in Hill Mead Primary School. We talked about what chickens need to be cared for, and how we should treat the chickens. Then we had the chance to meet the chickens!

We absolutely loved meeting the chickens and we found out lots of new things. Did you know that the red bit on top of a chickens head is called a comb? We are still finding out lots of new things about chickens - it is so interesting!

What would you like to find out about chickens?

Teamwork makes the dream work!

Today in Reception we started working together as a team to see how long we could make a snake using magnetic construction pieces. We had to make sure that we were all being gentle and taking care whilst we added the next piece of the snakes body on. We then worked as a team to pick the snake up, we decided it would be best to all pick it up slowly together on the count of 3. We were so pleased when we managed to pick it up successfully keeping the snake in one piece.

After we had made a snake we wondered what else we could make. Afia thought it would be a really good idea to make a circle, so that's exactly what we did! We listened to each others' instructions to move round into a circle and were so proud when we achieved what we had set out to do.

Rainy Days

Over in the Early Years nothing can stop us from going outside, as the saying goes;

"There's no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothes".

We like to be outside as much as possible, and on a rainy day last week we decided it would be a good idea to make a rain shelter to keep us dry. We worked together as a team to make sure the shelter was big enough for us all to fit under and strong enough to stay up in the wind.

Please make sure that your child is appropriately dressed on a daily basis. If you would like to bring in a pair of wellington boots for your child, please put them in a named carrier bag on their peg.

Reception Topic

Handa's Hen

We love listening to stories and will be enjoying reading books including 'Handa’s Hen', which is our focus story this term. We will be working towards retelling this story ourselves later in the term. We will be looking at non-fiction texts in Brixton Library to develop our understanding of different countries and cultures, including villages like the setting for Handa’s Hen.

Nursery Topic

Handa's Surprise

We have been trying the fruit from the
story 'Handa's Surprise'.
We will be exploring the story of 'Handa’s Surprise' this term as well as other Black cultural stories including 'We’re Going on a Lion Hunt'. We will be comparing environments, fruit tasting, writing shopping lists and will even try to visit Brixton market to buy some of our own fruits.
Which fruit is your favourite? "I like the banana"
